selection process

1. Application and Eligibility:

  • Eligibility: Generally requires a B.E./B.Tech or equivalent degree in the relevant engineering discipline (Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, Civil, Electrical, Architecture, etc.) with an aggregate minimum of 65% marks or CGPA 6.84/10. Final year students are often eligible if their degree is available by a specified date.
  • Age limits apply (typically 28 years for UR/EWS, with relaxations for reserved categories).
  • An application fee is usually charged, with partial or full refunds for certain categories upon appearing for the written exam.

2. Written Examination:

  • This is the first major stage of the selection process.
  • Format: Generally an objective-type question paper.
  • Sections: Usually comprises two parts:
    • Part A: Discipline/Subject Specific Section: Focuses on core engineering subjects relevant to the applied discipline. It typically has 80 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), with negative marking (e.g., -1/3 for each wrong answer).
    • Part B: Aptitude/General Ability Test: Assesses general aptitude, reasoning abilities, numerical skills, and problem-solving. This part usually has fewer questions (e.g., 15-20 MCQs) and typically no negative marking.
  • Duration: The total duration for the written exam is generally 120 minutes.
  • Weightage: Performance in the written test is crucial for shortlisting for the next stage.

3. Interview:

  • The ratio for shortlisting is generally around 1:5 (meaning 5 candidates are shortlisted for every 1 vacancy), with a minimum number of candidates for each post.
  • The interview assesses:
    • Technical (Academic) Knowledge: In-depth understanding of the relevant engineering discipline.
    • General Awareness: Related to the area of specialization (technical).
    • Presentation/Communication Skills.
    • Comprehension.
    • Academic Achievements: Marks may be allocated based on institute type (IITs, IISc, NITs, NIRF top-ranked institutes), academic performance (CGPA/percentage), and rank awarded by the institute.
  • Document Verification: Candidates are bring all original documents for verification.

4. Final Merit List:

  • The final selection panel is prepared by giving weightage to both the written test marks and the interview marks.
  • Qualifying criteria (minimum marks) are set for both the written test and the interview, which vary for unreserved and reserved categories.
  • Tie-breaking criteria are applied in case of a tie in final marks (e.g., higher marks in the written test, higher marks in essential qualification, older candidate).
How to Prepare
  • Understand the Syllabus and Exam Pattern: Thoroughly go through the detailed syllabus for your specific engineering discipline and understand the structure of the written test (Part A and Part B).
  • Focus on Core Concepts: Strengthen your fundamental concepts in your engineering discipline.
  • Practice Previous Year Papers: Solve as many previous year’s question papers as possible to understand the question trends, difficulty level, and time management.
  • Mock Tests: Take regular mock tests to simulate the exam environment and improve speed and accuracy.
  • Time Management: Develop an effective time management strategy for both the written test and overall preparation.
  • Study Material: Use quality study material and recommended textbooks for your discipline.
  • Aptitude and General Awareness: Don’t neglect the Aptitude & Ability section. Practice logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude, and stay updated on general technical awareness related to your specialization.
